To explain just how Irish cultural organisations and groups can apply for the European funds, Ms Childers held an information seminar in Kilkenny on Wednesday last in The Pembroke Hotel. Speakers included Katie Lowry, The Arts Council, who is their International Arts Officer and European Cultural Contact Point and advises groups around Ireland on the Creative Europe EU funding programme. Also speaking was Kath Gorman, whose organisation ‘Cork Midsummer Festival’ received funding from Europe.

The case for funding for rural development in areas such asKells will be made in the European Parliament, Nessa Childers MEP pledged during a visit to the Co Meath town last Friday. During the visit the Ireland East MEP met arts and culture groups, community enterprise and tourism groups along with and Chamber of Commerce representatives. The meetings were organised by Cllr Tommy Grimes.

Ireland East Labour MEP Nessa Childers said the news today that PayPal is creating 1,000 jobs in Dundalk was a great boost for the town and for the whole county of Louth and surrounding areas. “This is the kind of news we need more of”, she said, “with unemployment in Ireland East at such high levels we all must play our part in making sure everything is in place to encourage job creation. I hope this development bodes well for future job creation in Dundalk and Louth.”

Nessa Childers MEP today called for tighter regulation of cancer causing food, drink and tobacco industries to fight a potential cancer epidemic in Ireland. Ms Childers, who is vice president of the MEPs Against Cancer Group in the European Parliament, was responding to the report that new cases of cancer could rise by 72% by 2030 in the Republic of Ireland. The report was issued to coincide with World Cancer Day. The World Health Organisation report stated that Ireland has topped a list of 27 countries in the European Union with cases predicted to rise from 19,454 in 2008 to 33,416 in 18 years.
