Chancellor Merkel should today apologize to European Parliament

Posted on November 07, 2012

Speakingduring today's visit of Chancellor Merkel to theEuropean Parliament, Nessa Childers MEPsays she should apologize for her disastrous one-sided austerity policies in Europe. "I welcome Chancellor Merkel today totheEuropean Parliament, but I will be of many MEPs asking that she apologize for her failed one-sided austerity policies in Europe today.

"Many MEPs like myself have opposed these wrong-headed policies for three years now. Many trade unions, civil society groups and NGOs have also opposed them. Even the IMF recentlyagreedthat theseausterity policies have been based on a serious miscalculation of their impact oneconomicgrowth andjobs. We see this all too clearly in Ireland.

"The consequence of this massivepolicy error is enormous hardshipfor the people of Europe, especially in those countries where EU-IMF Troikas have imposed particularly harsh policies on citizens. It adds insult to injury that people have lost their jobs and livelihoods and seen public services and social provision ravaged as a result of a mixture of neo-liberal ideology and faulty economics.

"Plenty of voices, includingmyown, have been warning over the last three years of exactly the consequencesof one-sided austerity on economic growth and jobs. But our warningswererejected.

"It is time for Chancellor Merkeland her conservative alliesto apologizefor this serious policy failure, tochange courseand stop digging Europe into an even deeper hole."
