Dear Sir, Conor Pope raises ("Food labelling in Ireland is a farce", 27/3/12) the important issue of how our food is labelled. We are what we eat and labelling involves health, trade, marketing, food safety, environmental and ethical issues.
Childers confronts Eurozone chiefs

An austerity-led approach to Ireland and Europe’s economic difficulties is not working and more growth has to be encouraged, Ireland East MEP Nessa Childers has stated.
Speaking in the European Parliament on Tuesday 27 March, Ms Childers said:“In contrast to the US Federal Reserve, which has to fight inflation and foster employment, the ECB follows only the single mandate of monetary stability.”
She asked the Parliament to agree that“the European debt crisis cannot be solved without a return to economic growth”and that “the austerity-led approach has actually hindered economic growth and thus has failed.”
Enniscorthy and Craanford groups say rural development funding essential to protect communities and create jobs

The case for funding for rural development was presented during a meeting last week in Crannford with Karl and Marina Middleton, Josie Green, Bridie Kenny and Donal Kenny. The group discussed Government policy on rural schools and the role play by EU funding for rural development.
Fiscal Compact Treaty a bitter pill - but necessary to protect Ireland's future economic interests

Like many people in Ireland, and inother European countries, I have concerns abouttheFiscal Compact Treaty, and my concerns were stated long before last week’s announcement that we would need to hold a referendum.
However, although I have concerns about the treaty I will not campaign against it.
I see it as a bitter pill we have to swallow, particularly now that we have to vote in a referendum.
While political parties like Sinn Fein havethe luxury of takingany position on the treaty, the Labour Partydoes not have this luxury.

Over the 2014-2020 period, the European Commission has proposed a budget of €1.8 billion for European cultural and visual media projects.
Closer to home, the EU has recently given the West Cork Chamber Music Festival €100,000, the Belfast Festival at Queens €100,000 and The Flying Gorillas, an Irish performance art group, €200,000.
