Ann Phelan TD and Cllr. William Quinn, and my group started the day with a visit to Borris Food and Craft market. We then travelled to the Seven Oaks Hotel in Carlow Town to meet John Boyd, Lorraine Hynes, and Marie Walsh, members of Carlow Tidy Towns.
Janette O'Brien, Carlow County Council Community and Enterprise Services, and Michael Brennan Town Clerk, Carlow Town Council, were also inattendance as both are centrally involved in supporting the work of the Tidy Towns Committee. We were also joined by Cllr Des Hurley, and the meeting in the Seven Oaks Hotel was followed by a guided tour of the Visual Theatre and Contemporary Arts Centre.
The Visual Theatre for Contemporary Art and the George Bernard Shaw Theatre represents a commitment of €18million by the local Authority in the Social, Cultural and Economic Development of the Town and County and has been a wonderful “good news” story.
The ethos of community involvement and social inclusion permeates the plans and strategies of Visual. The centre has won many awards during its two years of existence and not the least a National Tidy Towns Award in 2010, see www.visualcarlow.ie for more information.
We were kindly guided around the Arts Theature by Susan Holland, Acting Curator and Marketing Manager, Miriam Roche. During the visit we viewed exhibits by Samuel Walsh, Sonja Landweer and Mary Cullen.
