Nessa Childers MEP has welcomed the European Parliament’s approval of €13 million to be allocated to Ireland to help defray the cost to the taxpayer of the clean up and rescue operations relating to last year’s floods in Ireland.
Speaking in Strasbourg, the Leinster MEP said: “This money will be allocated to the State and will be used to help recoup some of the considerable costs to local authorities and other agencies involved in the massive clean up operation last November.
“I understand that discussions have taken place between affected agencies and government in order to prioritise the allocations of these monies from the European Union Solidarity Fund.
“The Fund was created in 2002 to respond to the major flooding catastrophe in Central Europe in 2002. To date, the Fund has been accessed on over 30 occasions. I very much welcome the allocation from the Fund which represents a very practical example of EU Members States working together.”
