Local Labour MEP, Nessa Childers has warmly welcomed the decision by the people of the Ireland East constituency to overwhelmingly back the Lisbon Treaty.
She said, “The Yes vote in the Leinster area, at an average of 69.3% was higher than the national average. I have been campaigning vigorously with local Labour TDs, Councillors and members since last August, all of whom have been asking voters to set aside their anger with this appalling government and do the right thing for Ireland and Europe.
“People have responded to our message that Lisbon will make European states work more effectively together on pressing matters such as economic revival and growth and tackling climate change and provides, under the Charter of Fundamental Rights, considerable improvements in the rights of workers.
“As a member of the European Parliament Environment Committee, I am looking forward to Europe using its much bigger influence on the world stage to combat climate change and to work on renewable energy projects and energy security which is critical to our future.”
