Visit to Navan and Trim on Friday 27 April

Job Club members in discussion with Mayor Anton McCabe and Nessa Childers MEPLast Friday, 27th April, we visited Navan and Trim. Our first stop was the Meath Job Club, where we were joined by Mayor Anton McCabe.

Speaking at the meeting, organised by Job Club Facilitator Roisin McNeil, Nessa told the meeting that ‘Meath Job seekers face particular problems, namely lack of public transport and absence of local training opportunities’.

Nessa recounted her experience of unemployment in the 1980s, when she eventually went on to become a self-employed physiotherapist. Mayor Anton McCabe, said he would arrange for a delegation from the Job Club to address Navan Town Council.

Roisin McNeil, introduced the participants, and said there was a need to help people transfer their skills from one sector to another sector, for example from manufacturing to training a new generation of craft workers who could find employment in heritage and restoration work.  McNeil also explained that unemployed people often had to wait a considerable length of time before being able to access training, and then faced long journeys to Dublin or Dundalk.

Labour in Government must ensure that those in society that believe they can behave with arrogant impunity are pursued and brought to justice

Text and video of Nessa speaking at Conference in support of Motion 142 which deals with the Mahon Report

"Good morning,  I am very pleased to speak in support of vigorous action being taken by the Government to implement the Mahon Report, as set out in this motion.

As many of you will know, I have been pressuring the European Commission as regards former Commissioner Padraig Flynn, and whether he has brought the office of Commissioner into disrepute.  The Commissioner has indicated they are willing to take action against his EU pension if the Criminal Assets Bureau find against Mr.Flynn and I truly hope this is the case as soon as possible.

The Labour Party has an excellent record in relation to the issues examined by Mahon and Moriarty - however we cannot rest on our laurels.   Our re-action to the Mahon Report will be our white-collar crime test.  Labour in Government must ensure that those in society that believe they can behave with arrogant impunity are pursued and brought to justice.
